The Church and Society Program of the CCAP Blantyre Synod on Wednesday finished its Tropical Cyclone Response Project with the distribution of relief items to 50 households from Malunda village in Traditional Authority Njema at the foot of Mulanje Mountain.

Reverend Donnex Mateyu Ngalande told Zodiak Online that while the core value of CCAP as a church is to spread the word of God, it has also other values like love and tolerance, non-discrimination, peaceful coexistence and transparency and accountability.

“This disaster did not spare the CCAP Christians and it is important to reach the affected families both CCAP members and those that are not our members with the little we had,” said Reverend Ngalande.

Reverend Ngalande did not mince any word as he told the recipients of the relief items that destruction of environment is the cause of this disaster.

He therefore promised that the Church and Society Program will this year support tree planting activity in Mulanje Mountain.

According to Reverend Ngalande, similar donations were also made in T/A Nanda in Mulanje and T/A Mkhumba in Phalombe district.

Meanwhile, Deputy Spokesperson for the Department of Disaster and Management Affairs Chimwemwe Njoloma says the flow of relief support to the Cyclone Freddy affected households is per request by individual district councils as most camps have now been decommissioned.

Njoloma said out of 747 camps the country registered, only 174 are remaining and most of these camps are in Lower Shire.

“In the Lower Shire districts of Nsanje and Chikwawa, water levels are still high is some places nd people cannot go back to their homes and let me indicate that some affected households might be relocated to uplands,” said Njoloma.

The March 2023 Tropical Cyclone Freddy affected over 2 million people of which close to 660, 000 people were displaced.
