Police Raid Refugees, Asylum Seekers in Thyolo
Police have raided Goliati trading centre in Thyolo and reportedly picked four Burundians in a relocation drive.
South East Police Region spokesperson, Edward Kabango said he needed more time to provide details.
But Goliati Oversight Police chairperson, James Yuda confirmed the development on Tuesday, adding that some have run away.
Yuda said the operation faced some resistance as some communities tried to block it, arguing the Burundians help them in social and economic endeavours.
"Some were not happy with the action saying that the foreign nationals play crucial roles in helping the communities when faced with challenges," he said.
Zodiak Online has also been informed that police rounded three others at Makwasa trading centre in the district.
The forced refugee and asylum seekers relocation exercise comes after they defied the 15 April 2023 mark of voluntarily getting back to Dzaleka camp in Dowa.
The move has been backed by the small scale business owners, but received a backlash from several human rights bodies including the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) which has promised a probe.
