Chilima's Duties Returned?
Government is not coming out clear on whether president Lazarus Chakwera has rescinded his decision to withdraw delegated duties to his vice president Saulos Chilima.
In June last year, President Lazarus Chakwera made a public pronouncement that he had withheld vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima's delegated duties after being implicated in alleged corruption with businessman Zunneth Sattar.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) alleges that Chilima and other top government officials were receiving bribes from the businessman to win government contracts.
But as of late, the vice president has been seen discharging duties in his capacity. The latest of such is as seen on Thursday when he led on tour, visiting Zimbabwe president Emmerson Mnangagwa to the Kamuzu Mausoleum and the new Parliament building in the capital Lilongwe.
Government spokesperson Moses Kunkuyu says without stating whether this now means the president has reversed his June, 2022 decision said, this is in the best interest of the country.
Political expert Chimwemwe Tsitsi says this silence is worrisome, calling upon authorities to clarify on the actions.
Chilima is currently on bail, following his arrest by the ACB in November last year and is facing three counts of corrupt practices by a public officer and two counts of receiving advantage for using influence in regard to contracts, a matter which has since been committed to the high court.
