Contractor who is building ten houses for the Cyclone Freddy survivors at Ntambalika village in Mulanje district is upbeat that he will finish constructing the houses by 10th September, 2023.

The ten houses are under the Tigwirane Manja project which the offices of the former presidents of Malawi, Dr. Joyce Banda and Dr. Bakili Muluzi as Goodwill Ambassadors on Cyclone Freddy Recovery are building in partnership with local and international organizations.

The two former presidents launched the project on 26th May, 2023 but actual construction started on 5th July.

Thomas Gwebede of T-Gwebede Construction Company told Zodiak Online on Thursday that all the houses are now at roofing level.

“With all the building materials available, I am sure that by mid next month, I will hand over these houses to the owners,” said Gwebede.

Two international religious organizations, Live Love Limited and Mosaic Global partnered with Joyce Banda Foundation International (JBFI) in this Mulanje project.

Blessings Chibambo who is the Country Director of Live Love Limited said he is impressed with the progress of the project.

“Our promise to construct 100 houses in this area still stands and this will be done in ten phases with ten houses in each phase, so after completing these ten houses, construction of other ten will start immediately,” said Chibambo.

On his part, JBFI Community Development Officer Brown Masingati said every penny will be used prudently on this housing project.

“We are optimistic that construction of these houses with be completed in time though the price of cement has increased painfully, and in some situations not available on the market,” said Masingati.

President Lazarus Chakwera appointed the two former presidents, Dr. Joyce Banda and Dr. Bakili Muluzi as Goodwill Ambassadors on Cyclone Freddy Recovery with focus on provision of houses for the internally displaced families.
