Neno Fish Farmers Call for Support
Fish farmers in Neno district have asked for resources such as nets, solar powered water pumps and fingerings to maximize production and improve their livelihoods.
One of them, Jota Donda, told Zodiak Online on Friday that they are struggling to harvest the fish because their nets are old, for example.
“We also need the water pumps so that we may be pumping water into our ponds during the dry season and maintain good water levels for our fish survival," he said.
Neno District Fisheries Officer, Chancy Gondwe, said plans are underway to establish fish farming clubs and supply them with necessary knowledge and materials.
"We know about these issues and I can confirm that most farmers are using recycled fingerings which is less productive but we will supply them with new ones very soon," said Gondwe.
He added that the district realized close to K10.5 million yearly from the 3, 000 metric tons of fish it harvests from its 195 dams.
