Pupil Handed Suspended Sentence for Possessing Teargas

Thyolo Senior Resident Magistrate Asunta Maxwell has on Thursday handed-over a 12-months suspended sentence to a Standard Seven learner at Nachipere Primary School for being found in possession of teargas.

The learner pleaded guilty that he got the explosive material on December 23, 2023 at a dumping site near police lines before he took it to the video show room where it detonated.

In mitigation, Felison asked for leniency since he is a learner and first offender.

Passing her judgement, Maxwell observed that though the offense attracts 14 years imprisonment, the learner has no past criminal record, was cooperative and shown remorse.

The magistrate has since suspended the sentence on condition that he does not commit a similar offense within the period.

She has further indicated that the convict's action was due to police negligence to properly dispose off their weapon.

After the sentence, there were all smiles at the court among stakeholders that included his teachers and relatives.

Felison comes from Ayironi village, in the area of Senior chief Nchiramwera in the district.
