Primary School Learners Opt for Farm Work in Chikwawa

Poverty has been cited as one of the major factors preventing learners particularly young girls at Mfera Primary School in Chikwawa from excelling with their studies.

Head teacher for the school, Lynos Chimedzo has told Zodiak that the development has forced the learners to concentrate in farming and other small-scale businesses for them to earn a living as well as for them to afford some basic school requirements.

"For instance, out of 98 candidates who sat for the 2023 Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education, only 40 passed of which only one candidate was selected to go to a district secondary school", said Chimedzo.

Meanwhile a grouping of some concerned youths from the area has donated text books among other school requirements to some best learners at the school a development vice chairperson for the grouping, Patricia Lufai says will encourage other learners to work had.

Meanwhile, one of the business persons from the area who is currently based in Johannesburg, Alexander Witness Gomiwa has pledged to support two best Standard 8 learners at the school with all their school requirements until they finish with their tertiary education.
