The Private Schools Owners Association of Malawi (PRISAM) has urged the government to include private school teachers in training programs for the new curriculum.

PRISAM President, Dr. Ernest Kaonga, made this request on Wednesday during his appearance before the Parliamentary Committee on Education, discussing ways to enhance education in the country.

Accompanied by Wycliffe Chimwendo, leader of the Independent Schools Association of Malawi (ISAMA), Dr. Kaonga emphasized the importance of training private school teachers.

He expressed concern that many schools are ill-equipped to implement the new curriculum.

"More needs to be done to train teachers from private schools to assist the government in promoting quality education," said Dr. Kaonga.

He also stressed the importance of registering private schools, noting that some operate with significant shortcomings.

Dr. Kaonga assured the committee that PRISAM is committed to supporting the government in ensuring only qualified schools operate, thereby enhancing the quality of education in Malawi.

These remarks come amid numerous challenges facing the education sector, including shortages of classrooms, desks, learning and teaching materials, teachers' housing, and potable water in some schools.

Recently, President Lazarus Chakwera reiterated his government's focus on implementing projects in education, health, agriculture, and transport to improve the lives of Malawians.
