MCP Noncommittal on Filling NEC Positions

Kabwila; this is equally an important matter for the MCP Kabwila; this is equally an important matter for the MCP

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is noncommittal as to when it will fill the remaining positions in its National Executive Committee which were not contested for during its recent elective conference.

The party's spokesperson Dr. Jessie Kabwila has told Zodiak that the matter will depend on how the president of the party who is also the country's head of state will deem it convenient to act upon.

“As your are aware, the president for the party, who is also the head of state, has been outside the country for official duties. So depending on his schedule, he is likely to act upon the matter soon . Remember we are a party in government, so it means we have to balance our party’s interests with national interests as well,” said Kabwira without specifying when the party is to fill the positions.

However, political expert George Allan Phiri has advised the MCP to treat the matter as a priority if the party is to re-organise itself ahead of the 2025 elections.

“Tight schedule of the president or not, this is equally an important matter for the MCP especially now as the party gears for the upcoming elections. Should the MCP choose to dilly-dally on this issue like it always has been doing, then that will be at at its own cost," said Phiri.

Out of the 90 positions for the MCP's, National Executive Committee only 20 positions were filled by delegates during its recently concluded elective conference with powers given to its president to lead the party’s other National Executive Committee (NEC) members to feel the remaining 70 positions.

Earlier on, chairperson for the MCP’s elective conference Kezzie Msukwa told Zodiak that the party will prioritise candidates who had collected nomination forms to compete in various positions during the convention but their positions were not voted for.

Since 2021, the MCP has been operating without its other crucial positions such that of vice president for the southern region and director of research following the death of initial holders of the positions, late Muhammad Sidik Mia and Lingson Belekanyama respectively whose positions the party could not fill.
