Limbe police station deputy spokesperson, Chibisa Mlimbika, says a tally of crime figures for 2022 and 2023 show both crime and road traffic accidents have declined by 18 percent and 26 percent respectively this year.

However, Mlimbika says shortage of the gadgets and street lights in the city, is prohibiting maximum use of the cameras as they face poor visibility at night.

"We believe that the CCTV security project scares criminals from committing crimes knowing the results, hence a drop in crime rate," he said.

Meanwhile, Mlimbika revealed that the law enforcers have achieved this feet with only five cameras.

He called for more support to plant many cameras in other corners of the town to fully utilize the security technology.

Security analystnSheriff Kaisi says apart from ensuring adequate security for the cameras, the city fathers could help the police efforts by installing more lights along the roads.

Meanwhile, there was no immediate comment from the Blantyre City Council on the matter.

In 2023, Limbe police became the first police formation in the country to plant the CCTV cameras in the city with support from the corporate world to improve security.
