Thyolo Man Gets Five Years for Stabbing Wife

The Thyolo Second Grade Magistrate Court has ordered a 26-year-old-man Rabson Namagowa to pay a fine of K600,000 or serve a five-year prison sentence with hard labour for stabbing his wife in the abdomen.

Masambanjati police state prosecutor Sub-Inspector Henry Chitandale told the court that on May 21, 2024, the convict asked his wife to give him K7,000 to buy beer, but she refused as it was meant to buy food for the family.

Chitandale said this angered Namagowa who fished out a knife and stabbed his wife in the abdomen and the intenstines protruded out.

The wife was rushed to Changata health centre before she was further refered to Malamulo Mission Hospital for specialist care.

Police managed to arrest Namagowa and charged him with a case of acts intended to cause grievous harm under Section 235 of the penal code.

When he appeared in court, the convict pleaded not guilty to the offense, but three state witnesses proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

However, the convict asked the court for leniency, considering that he is a first offender and acted under the influence of alcohol.

When passing sentence, first grade magistrate James Balakasi agreed with the state that cases of gender-based violence remain rampant in the country, as such the sentence should serve as a deterrent to would-be-offenders.

Namagowa comes from Muwalo village, Traditional Authority Changata in Thyolo district.
