Thyolo Requires K7.5 Million for Modern Dump Site

The Thyolo District Council says it needs about K7.5 million for the construction of a modern dump site in the district after it finally secured land.

District Commissioner Hudson Kuphanga told Zodiak Online Wednesday that Conforzi Tea Estate has provided the land besides partnering with the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) to set up a biomass plant to make manure from the refuse.

"The facility will consist waste collection drums, a waste separation site and a recycling facility. So the council requires K7.5 million to put up the facility which is not available as at now," he said.

He, nevertheless, indicated that to ease the current pressure on waste management at the market, the council will excavate a new dump pit at the identified site.

Currently, vendors are dump garbage near the Thyolo flea market, making the area filth .

Meanwhile, the district's Civil Society Organisations (CSO) chairperson Willard Mwambo called on various stakeholders to support the construction project which is expected to address poor waste management issues in the district.

"Let me commend the leadership of the district council for the efforts and Conforzi Plantation Limited for the land. Various stakeholders need to come together and support the construction of the site," he said.

For a long time, the construction of the dump site at the boma has been failing due to land scarcity.
