Chikuli Bridge in Mulanje district on the Limbe-Midima-Muloza has been submerged in flood waters following the bursting of the banks of Chikuli River.

This follows continuous rains that are falling in most parts of the country.

Since Tuesday early morning Chikuli Bridge has been under water.

Senior police Assistant Commissioner, Kelvin Mulezo, who is Officer-In-Charge for Mulanje Police has since issued a public warning against motorists crossing the bridge.

“For the time being motorists going to and from Mulanje better use Limbe-Thyolo-Muloza road,” said Mulezo.

Meanwhile, Ruo River also continues swelling raising fears of floods.

The ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development this week issued a forecast that predicted floods in Southern Malawi especially the Lower Shire.

Assistant District Disaster Risk Reduction Officer in Mulanje, Keith Saenda, says villagers close to the river have been advised to move upland for safety.

“We have not yet started assessing the damage caused by these heavy suffice to say that as of now severe damage has been observed on crops,” said Saenda.

Other rivers which the water resources department indicated would flood are Mwanza and Shire. There are already reports of devastation in Nsanje district.
