Director of Administration of Chiefs in the ministry of local government, Charles Makanga, said widening information gap and ancient mindset by local council officials are impeding effective implementation of Decentralization.

Makanga said, District Information Officers would help deepening decentralization tenets among officers in various district councils across the country.

“These District Information Officers will deepen decentralization tenets among officers in our district councils,” he said.

On Thursday, the ministry of Local Government held an orientation meeting in Dowa for District Information Officers across the country on decentralization.

Meanwhile, District Information Officer for Likoma, Charles Botha, said the ministry had taken a commendable step in ensuring that information officers have an understanding of the system.

Botha said, after undergoing the training communities will see a change in how the officers discharge their duties.

“This training is an eye opener as it has deepened our knowledge on Decentralization and we will be able to discharge our duties,” he said.

Decentralization was introduced in Malawi's Constitution in 1994.
