Ntcheu Livestock Slaughter Ban Due to Foot And Mouth Outbreak

Barely days after foot and mouth disease resurfaced in Ntcheu, the ministry of agriculture has issued a temporary ban on beef, goat meat and pork in all markets in the district.
Spokesperson for the ministry, Priscilla Mateyu, told Zodiak Online that the restriction is to contain the outbreak and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the country.

The ban stops the slaughter of livestock such as goats, cattle, pigs and sheep and its selling.

"The ministry through the department of Animal health and livestock development has currently intensified surveillance for early animal detection, warning and response," she said.

Mateyu said community sensitization on the disease is also being done to control further spread of the outbreak.

In the meantime, seven cattle out of 128 from Sharpvale Extension Planning Area have tested positive to the disease in the distirct.
