Bishop Nkosi Quits as MEC Commissioner

Bishop Mary Nkosi has gone on leave pending retirement June 5 as commissioner at the beleaguered Malawi Electoral commission.

Commissioner Bishop Nkosi disclosed this to Zodiak Online Monday indicating she would be going on leave immediately.

This is coming in the middle of resumed public calls for all MEC commissioners to step-down after the Constitutional Court, Parliament and later the Supreme Court found them to be incompetent following the mismanagement of 2019 polls.

Nkosi insists that her going on leave pending retirement has nothing to do with public calls for their paving way for a new commission to manage the impending election as ordered by the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court.

Except for MEC Chairperson Dr. Jane Ansha, contracts for all seven commissioners expire on June 5 this year.

Bishop Nkosi came in the limelight when she appeared before the Public Appointments Committee of parliament where she expressed dissatisfaction with the manner MEC run the polls.

Among other things, she told the committee that commissioners did not sign for official results of the May 2019 presidential election until the day of the hushed swearing-in.

She also told the parliamentary committee that her relationship with some of the commissioners was bad as they thought she was a traitor and leaked inside information.
