Second Feasibility for Coal Fired Power Generation Project

The Malawi government will soon award a contract for second phase of a feasibility study for a possible coal fired power generation project at Kammwamba in Ntcheu.

Spokesperson for the Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO), Moses Gwaza, says the second study will aim to evaluate cost for implementing the project.

“The successful contractor will be unveiled soon and the public will be told,” he said.

Gwaza has assured the public that the Kam'mwamba power project is still on the cards hence asked Malawians for patience on the same.

Malawi has for decades relied much on hydro-electric power generation which has proven not only insufficient but also unreliably expensive.

Over dependence on hydro-electricity has resulted in frequent power outages due to low water levels in Shire River.

According to EGENCO, first phase of the coal fired power generation at Kam'mwamba is expected to produce 300 Megawatts of electricity.
