The Chinese people have made available thermometers, masks and hospital caps to the Christian Health Association of Malawi-CHAM-as contribution to the fight against Covid-19 in Malawi.

Presenting the items to CHAM Monday, Deputy Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Wang Xinsheng, said the Chinese government is committed to helping ensure Malawi is free of the virus again.

The deputy envoy also said with its experience with the pandemic, the Chinese government will share with Malawi practical ways of fighting the global pandemic.

“We will share with the country how we coped and managed with pandemic. Our government will not relent but give Malawi the necessary support,” said Wang, the deputy Chinese ambassador.

CHAM Executive Director, Happy Makala, was all praises for the government of China for the personal protective equipment and thermometers saying the items had come in handy for them.

Makala said the CHAM hospitals had been struggling to access the PPEs due to financial constraints yet the hospitals have a duty and responsibility to help people who are unwell.

“We have also been hugely affected. Our hospitals do not have adequate protective gear. This donation will go a long way in the fight against the pandemic,” Makala observed.

The first Covid-19 case in Malawi was diagnosed on April 2 this year three months after the first case was identified in Wuhan, China in December of 2019.

While over 83,000 have been infected by the corona virus in China and over 3300 died, in Malawi at the moment, there are around 300 active cases, around 40 recoveries and four deaths.

China, with a population of about 1.3 billion, now has only about 90 new cases, mostly imported.

The numbers are souring in Malawi largely because inadequate testing and citizens returning from abroad especially South Africa, the epicenter of the pandemic on the African continent.
