Three months ago when the Democratic Progressive Party was still in power, a governor of the party had the courage to assault the Secretary General of the then opposition Malawi Congress Party, right at a police station in Lilongwe.

A week on, the DPP is no longer in power after its president Peter Mutharika was floored in a fresh presidential election by the leader of the MCP Lazarus Chakwera.

And that DPP governor was back at the same police station. This time as a suspect on charges of assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

The DPP governor, David Kambalame, was arrested this afternoon on allegation he assaulted MCP Secretary General Eisenhower Mkaka 11 April 2020.

Mkaka had gone to the police station on the fateful day to report an incident where some DPP followers had allegedly collected national IDs for individuals.

Malawi Police Service spokesperson, James Kadadzera, says Kambalame will be taken to court immediately the case files are ready.

At that time, police ignored the Kambalame action presumably because the alleged offender was on the side of the then ruling DPP under former President Peter Mutharika.

The suspect has since been granted police bail.
