President Lazarus Chakwera’s commitment to ensuring that the powers of a sitting president are reduced in Malawi has been met with applause from stakeholders and governance experts who think this has been overdue and must now be made practical.

Justin Dzonzi, a legal and governance expert says Chakwera’s commitment would best be realised where responsible state agencies facilitated the process with expected speed.

Dzonzi says reduction of the powers of the president is key to Malawi’s democratization process.

The push for commitment by candidates to May 2019 presidential elections to reduce powers if they were elected was propelled by the Public Affairs Committee, a grouping of the majority religious denominations in the country.

Ahead of the 2019 presidential election, PAC invited presidential candidates to signing commitment to meeting 17 expectations of Malawians whom the committee represents.

But aside committing to reduce powers assigned to his office, Chakwera also pledged to give his best to the presidency.

He implored on Malawians to roll up their sleeves and work.
