Ex-Police Inspector General Peter Mukhitho Arrested

Former director of state residences during Peter Mutharika’s reign Mr. Peter Mukhito has been arrested.

National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera has confirmed the arrest of Mukhitho in Lilongwe but said is yet to get more details on the arrest.

There are claims however that the arrest is linked to the alleged importation of 5-billion-kwacha worth duty-free cement saga.

Meanwhile, The Human Rights Defenders Coalition is demanding that former president Peter Mutharika must account for the importation of the 400 thousand bags of cement duty-free.

HRDC says sentiments by the former president last week denying knowledge of the imported duty-free cement from Zambia as a presidential privilege, displays his recklessness when he was head of state.

In a related development, Malawi Police Services has interdicted Central Region Commissioner of Police Evalista Chisale and 12 other law enforcers who are being accused of murdering Buleya Lule while in police custody.

A letter signed by the director of Human Resource management Stane Kaliza says the police officers have been interdicted from duty pending completion of a murder case.

High Court in Lilongwe has set Friday as the day it will make its decision public on whether former Central Region Commissioner, Evalista Chisale, and 12 other police officers should be released on bail.

Judge Ivy Kamanga said this on Tuesday in her chambers following an application for bail by Lugano Mwabutwa lawyer for the 13 police officers.

The police officers face a charge of murder in relation to the death of a murder suspect, Buleya Lule, while in police custody in Lilongwe last year.
