MHRC Gives Govt. 90 Days to Relocate Over 600 Landless Ex-PAL Workers in Kasungu

The Malawi Human Rights Commission MHRC has given government 3 months to relocate over 600 landless families from Kasungu to other idle land that previously belonged to Press Agriculture Limited, faulting it for violating their rights.
Commissioner for MHRC Martha Chizuma has attributed governments inaction for their ordeal.
Chizuma said this when she delivered a report on landless ex-estate workers in Kasungu district.
Around the 1970's government took these people from Mulanje, Thyolo, Phalombe, Mangochi to mention a few, to work in farms until the 2000s when PAL closed its operations.
The families have been rendered destitute since then following governments inaction despite their several pleas.
The matter was brought to MHRC's attention by Rev. Flywell Somanje, a lone man that has fought and advocated for these landless people since 2016.
He has managed to relocate several families to Rusa Estate in Mchinji using his own means. Somanje is hopeful this will change the lives of these people, if it materialises.
