Nkhata Bay Police Spokesperson, Kondwani James identified the deceased as a 23-year-old, Derrick Gondwe who is reported to have slept on the floor in his bedroom while it was raining.

“While the deceased was struck by lightning while sleeping, he was rushed to Chintheche Rural Hospital where he died while receiving treatment,” he said.

The Publicist added that the shock hit six occupants of other houses who got injured and are receiving treatment at Chintheche Rural Hospital in Nkhata Bay.

Gondwe hailed from Mfufu village TA Malanda in Nkhata Bay District.

Police are advising members of the public to be extra careful whenever it is raining to avoid similar deaths.
