However, Mpinganjira will serve 9 years in prison as the sentences for the two corruption counts for which he was convicted will run concurrently effective September 10, the day of his conviction.

The counts emanate from his attempt to influence the five judges in the case of the presidential elections, to favour Democratic Progressive Party candidate Peter Mutharika.

In her judgement; Judge Dorothy DeGabrielle said despite his mitigation Mpinganjira required a custodial sentence because there was clear evidence that he wanted to use his finances, power and influence to pervert justice.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Bureau says it is satisfied with the sentence. Defence lawyer Patrice Nkhono says they will appeal against both conviction and sentence.
