Lesser female opting for primary school teaching

A top education official has expressed concern that numbers of females applying for teacher training are going down in the country, a situation that has effect on the need for role models to encourage girls to enroll and stay in schools.

The policy direction in the ministry of education is that enrolment in teacher-training colleges be 50 per cent for female and male teacher-students but only a few females are showing interest.

Deputy Director in the Department of Teacher Education, Grace Milner, says the development is negatively affecting the idea of using female teachers to act as role models for girls.
