HRDC Gives Govt A 30-Day Ultimatum To Deal With Electricity Woes

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has given government a 30-day ultimatum to solve the electricity challenges in the country failing which they will organize nationwide demonstrations.

It follows the power challenges that have seen blackouts worsening partly due to the damage to the Kapichira Power Station due to Tropical Storm Ana in January this year.

HRDC Vice Chairperson Michael Kaiyatsa, has told Zodiak Online that they intend to hold the protests on 12 October 2022 if the situation does not improve.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Energy, Ibrahim Matola has revealed that an evaluation on how the unbundling of the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has performed will be carried out soon, six years after creation of another company, EGENCO now responsible for the generation of electricity.

He disclosed this during a media briefing in Lilongwe today where he also expressed concern with the blackouts.

Matola questioned the functions of the two utility bodies amid concerns that their operations conflict one another.
