MPS Registers a Decline in Defilement Cases

Statistics from Malawi Police Service show that the country has registered a drop in defilement cases by slightly over 300 in the first half of this year compared to last year.

Deputy National Police spokesperson Harry Namwaza has attributed the decrease to sensitization campaigns which have helped people know and appreciate evils of the vice.

But child rights activist Memory Ngosi Chisenga says there are more cases on the ground that remain unreported hence asking government to adopt defilement prevention strategies to stamp out the problem.

Meanwhile: Authorities at Mpemba and Chilwa reformatory centers say inadequate funding and shortage of teachers for vocational skills are major challenges currently affecting efforts to impart skills in the children in the facilities.

Principals for Mpemba, Mike Maulidi and Moffat Harra Principal at Chilwa Reformatory centres have told Zodiak that they require 120 million Kwacha per financial year but they are receiving 53 million Kwacha.
