Chakwera Justifies Decision to Fire Minister

President Lazarus Chakwera yesterday told the nation he is not impressed with the performance of some of his cabinet ministers who are not only incompetent but also corrupt.

He has assured there will be more changes than the firing of agriculture Lobin Lowe over the missing of millions of kwacha meant for subsidy fertilizer under the Affordable Input Programme. He has replaced him with Sam Kawale.

In a national address last night, President Chakwera said Lowe has been fired alongside his deputy Madalitso Wirima Kambauwa, for what he described as negligence in the procurement process.

The president insists his government has contacted central banks of two countries through which the money, 725000 US dollars, was paid in two instalments to have it paid back.

The president also announced a strategy for Malawi to wean off the AIP programme.

later Zodiak Online caught up with different analysts starting with governance analyst Victor Chipofya who hails the president for making a bold decision on the matter.

He however blames the president for not providing a timeframe for the phasing out of the AIP.
