Staff members at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources are staging a sit-in to force government increase their salaries to be at par with all public universities.

 

According to the members of staff, their salary is 30 per cent lower compared to their counterparts of the same grade from other public universities.

 

14 months have elapsed since the concern was raised and the workers say their management has not resolved their queries prompting them to resort to industrial action.

 

UNION Staff President,Sekanawo Kasiya, told Zodiak Online today that workers feel salaries are too low and have vowed to continue staging the strike until government addresses the issue which has been presented to the ministry of Labour. Kasiya added that tools will remain down for as long as the matter is not resolved.

 

“There will be no classes until this matter is resolved. We are hopeful that management will resolve this issue. They have assured us that they will comply by December or January and the rest will be done in July 2020, so members of staff are not happy with that arrangement,” Kasiya said.

 

Spokesperson in the Ministry of Labour Christina Mkutumula asked for more time before commenting on the matter.
