“We want to identify the challenges the communities are facing and also giving them a platform to suggest how they think their problems can be addressed,” Billiat said adding “Now we will be able to indicate where we where before we got into this commitment.”

 

In 2015, United Nations member states adopted the SDGs as a call to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. Already Malawi appears on track to miss a majority of the targets.

 

UN Resident Coordinator, Maria Jose Torres, says the global organization will support the country in various initiatives to enable it achieve its goal by 2030.

 

“There are very good things that are also happening in Malawi, it also provides an opportunity to see with the ambition of sustainable development on what else can be done. And with the conversation we were having in the room about financing SDG’s or how we make sure that the framework and ambition is also seconded by the money and the implementation so people can see the reference on the ground,” Torres said.
