RA Reacts to State of New Zomba- Jali- Phalombe- Chitakale Road

Roads Authority (RA) has ordered contractor of the newly- constructed Zomba- Jali- Phalombe- Chitakale road, Fargo Limited, to rehabilitate some sections of the road because they are in a bad state.

The development comes amid concerns, from road users, over the quality of the newly constructed 102 kilometers road.

Chairperson for Roads Authority, Brown Mpinganjira, told Zodiak Online yesterday that after inspecting the road, consultants and the contractor agreed to redo eight kilometers of some section of the road.

Mpinganjira said, during the tour, they found that there are some parts of the road where the tarmac is bleeding and therefore need to be reworked.

"The contractor has acknowledged the mistakes and has been given a period of four weeks to do the work," said Mpinganjira.

Speaking after opening the Zomba-Jali-Phalombe-Chitakale road in July, President Peter Mutharika, expressed concern with the quality of some roads which he did not name.

The President then warned that he would not pay such contractors since, to him, they were stealing from the government.

The Zomba-Jali- Phalombe-Chitakale Road begins from Zomba Air wing through trading centres of Jali, Misewu- Folo, Phalombe Boma and ends at the foot of Mulanje Mountain, at Chitakale.
