US Provides $1million for Malawi’s Cyclone Respons
The US Embassy in Malawi has given $1million (K1bn) to the United Nations World Food Program to charter two helicopters which will be used to reach out to over 200,000 people with food aid in southern Malawi.
The people are part of those whose areas have been cut off by heavy flooding and landslides that damaged roads, bridges and other transport infrastructure in Malawi during the recent Cyclone Freddy.
The people cannot be accessed by road.
US Ambassador to Malawi David Young says the air support will target those in Mulanje, Phalombe and Nsanje districts by providing them with relief items and air-lifting those in need of medical support to hospitals and other safer places.
Ambassador Young says that his government will lobby for more support to complement the current rescue and response efforts.
