High Court Adjourns to August 1 a Corruption Case Involving Veep Chilima

The High Court in Lilongwe has adjourned to August 1 when vice president Saulos Chilima will take plea in the corruption case he is answering.

Presiding Judge Reason has also given the state 21 days to provide disclosures of all relevant material to defense lawyers for their preparation before plea is taken.

However, Chilima will be back in court on 19 July, where he is expected to make an application for wavering of his bail conditions by a magistrates court before the matter was committed to the High Court.

Meanwhile, the Chief Resident Magistrate has adjourned a case involving former Homeland Security minister, Nicholas Dausi and four others, to Friday to allow the Anti- Corruption Bureau present a consent letter presented to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) before committing the matter to the Financial Crimes Court.

Defence lawyer Cassius Chidothi says they want a proof of the letter to the DPP, otherwise they see no basis of committing the case to the High Court.

The five have been charged with abuse of office in the procurement contract worth 18 billion kwacha between Government and One Guard FZE for supply of uniforms and equipment for the Malawi Prison Services.
