HRDC Reacts on Vehicle Import Duty Saga, Gives Govt 7-Day Ultimatum

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition – HRDC has given government a 7-day ultimatum to engage different stakeholders to address concerns bordering on the newly introduced vehicle import duty, or face unspecified action.

In a statement signed by the coalition’s national chairperson Gift Trapence, the rights group says the new import duty imposes unrealistic and punitive taxes on citizens, hindering economic growth and impeding the rights of individuals to engage in economic activities.

Trapence says if such measures are aimed at controlling the depleted forex, government should implement comprehensive actions to combat the real culprits and austerity measures on the travel expenses on public officers and presidential travel.
