Mother Scotches Son for Theft

A boy is in agony in Chikwawa district after his mother burnt his hands as punishment for eating the only food-boiled wild beans- that was in the home.

The mother, who is expectant, appeared in court on Monday. She has been remanded to Chikwawa prison. She comes from Saidi village in the area of Traditional Authority Mulilima.

The traditional authority told Zodiak Online that the incident has reignited the need to sensitize people in his area on the need to protect children and their rights.

“I don't why people are still doing. Police and non-governmental organizations have been helping us but I don’t understand why this continues to emerge,” said Mulilima.

Gender minister, Mary Navitcha, paid the boy a visit and condemned what happened.

“I am hopeful that justice will prevail,” she said pledging government support to the boy’s family which lives in a tiny grass thatched house.

Elsewhere also in Chikwawa, a man is said to have impregnated a step-daughter.

This has happened on an island called Mazongoza in the area of senior chief Makhuwira.

The step-father has been arrested and is at Nchalo Police Post, according to the police.

This is happening at a time Malawi is commemorating 16 days of activism when the nation joins the rest of the world reflecting on human and peoples’ rights.
