Malawi, Zambia in Partnership to Prevent Cross Border Cholera Infections

The ministry of health says it has strengthened collaboration with their Zambian to prevent the further spread of cholera which has caused havoc in that country.

The ministry’s spokesperson Adrian Chikumbe has confirmed these following reports of five suspected cases registered in Lilongwe involving a Zambian truck driver and some Malawians, two of which are still receiving cholera treatment.

A health expert Olive Mtema says authorities need to pay much attention to its porous borders and use of unchartered routes to control the disease from spreading to Malawi.

The ministry says Malawi’s cholera situation is not as bad as was the case the same period last year, as from November cumulatively the country has registered 49 cases from 9 health districts with 2 deaths.

However, the raging cholera outbreak from the neighboring Zambia has posed a health risk for Malawi prompting the line ministry to intensify control measures with health officials in that country, through the borders and unchartered routes.

The ministry’s spokesperson Adrian Chikumbe says for instance the health authorities have distributed cholera supplies in all sites of the border between Malawi and Zambia to control the further spread of cholera.

Chikumbe’s remarks come as Lilongwe has registered 5 suspected cholera cases involving a Zambian truck driver and some Malawians.

Zambia is dealing with one of its worst cholera outbreaks in recent years as 351 people have died and nearly 9,000 active cases have been registered.
