German Ambassador Leads Blood Drive Amid Malawi's Critical Shortage

The German ambassador to Malawi says the persistent shortage of blood in the country's hospitals compelled them to initiate the blood donation event, in a bid to boost storage, as the blood may be needed at any time.

The ambassador Ute Kornig said that the blood shortage threatens patients' care, and feels the donation has great potential pregnant women, accident victims and some in life-threatening conditions among others.

A long time donor Mphatso Msyali who says she has been donating blood foe over 20 years Mphatso Msyali has encouraged people to donate however little they can, because it counts in life-saving situations.

Meanwhile, MBTS spokesperson Mphatso Kaimvi says while young people of secondary school-going age are forthcoming, there’s a huge gap among the 35 year-old and above, due to various misconceptions, which she says they are targeting to control.

The day which is commemorated today globally has in the country been shifted to a later date due to the national mourning of the passing on of Late Vice President Saulos Chilima who died in a tragic plane crash in Chikangawa Forest in Mzimba, together with eight other officials he was travelling with on Monday.
