FUM Demands TRADE Transparency
Demand for transparency and accountability has become the first call in the new Transforming Agriculture through Diversification and Entrepreneurship Program (TRADE).
The call is coming from the Farmers’ Union of Malawi-FUM and economists in the wake of the 94 billion Kwacha program.
The program aims to boost 300,000 small scale farmers.
The Malawi economy is largely dependent on agriculture whose major players are peasant farmers.
TRADE is an agreement between the Malawi government and an international financial institution, IFAD.
The project aims at increasing productivity among small scale farmers and strengthening access to profitable markets.
FUM president, Frighton Njolomole, and Economics Association of Malawi-ECAMA president, Chikumbutso Kalilombe, said, in the past, such promising efforts have failed before because most intended beneficiaries were not reached.
