Kauma Residents Take Down Brick Fence Barricading a Public Cemetery

Irate residents from Kauma high density area in Lilongwe have physically demolished a brick fence which a businessperson constructed almost making a public cemetery inaccessible.

This is coming only a week after lands minister, Symon Vuwa Kaunda, gave the business person a seven-day ultimatum to bring down the fence or risk government bring it down.

The ultimatum elapsed yesterday Wednesday, December 25, 2019.

A representative of the concerned members of the Kauma community, Jafali Majiga, said their action was merely implementation of the ministerial directive earlier.

“The time-frame has elapsed! The minister assured us he gave them seven-day ultimatum to demolish the fence. Surprisingly, the fence building project was still in progress despite there being given a ultimatum,” he said.

We could not talk to lands minister Vuwa Kaunda as his phone went unanswered.

Meanwhile, members of the continued have proceeded to clear the land in what could end up in a free for all grabbing of the, hitherto, private land.
