Girl Miscarries After Police 'Torture'

A 16-year-old girl who was being persuaded out of an under-age married has miscarried after alleged police torture in Mzimba.

A network of NGOs in Mzimba South, which is making the allegations, has since given Mzimba police five-days to arrest and prosecute police officers who were allegedly involved in the roughing-up the 16-year-old girl withdrawn from a marriage.

The girl was reportedly two and a half months expectant.

Talking to reporters this week, the chairperson for the network, Teckson Amadu, said if police will not take action as demanded, the NGO umbrella body shall be left with no option but sue the police to access justice as they are convinced that the girl’s rights have been infringed upon.

Officer-in-Charge at Mzimba Police Station, Assistant Commissioner Emmanuel Soko, said he is yet to read the statement on the matter and as such he would not comment at this stage.
