Councilors Split

Ward councilors in the country want government to review their conditions of service and hike their perks despite that their remuneration was reviewed earlier this year.

Leader of the concerned councilors, Alexander Cosmas, told journalists in Lilongwe at the weekend that the current conditions of service are far detouched from the cost of living.

The group has made the demands barely days after it accused the Malawi Local Government Association of failure to represent them on their welfare, hence emerging under the banner Concerned Councillors, as a splinter group.

In March this year, government hiked the honorarium and general allowance for councilors in the country, a move the ministry of local government justified was aimed at improving welfare of councilors in Malawi.

For instance, the honorarium was adjusted to K100,000 per month, a motorcycle loan of K1.5m and sitting allowance ranging from K15,000 to K25,000.

Addressing Journalists in Lilongwe on Saturday, Cosmas said the stipulated conditions of service need re-adjusting as they are not in-line with realities on the ground.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Local Government, Muhlabase Mughogho, requested for more time before commenting.

The concerned councilors are demanding adjustment of honorarium from K100 000 to K350,000, motorcycle loan from K1.5m to K5.2m, just to mention a few.
