Lilongwe Rains Wreck Havoc

Thousands of people have been rendered destitute while houses and other property have been destroyed between Wednesday and Thursday in Lilongwe due to heavy rains.

All rivers burst banks and water swept downstream anything in the way. But there has not, so far, been reports of loss of life.

High density townships of Areas 25, 50 Mtandire, Mgona, Senti and others have suffered floods in the days due to bursting of Nafisi and Nankhaka rivers.

The city of Lilongwe has a serious drainage problem that is resulting in uncontrolled traffic of water in residential areas.

Lilongwe City mayor, Juliana Kaduya, is urging residents to desist from constructing houses along rivers.

Ironically, it is the city council and the ministry of land that allocate land for residences in Lilongwe.
