Chitipa Conflict Raging

Friction between people of Chitipa and a mining investor and also the Malawi Revenue Authority appear to be growing with increased community action on the ground.

A group of people of Chitipa calling itself Concerned Citizens of Chitipa has given a Chinese Mining Firm; Ilomba Granite Company up to Tuesday next week to completely shut down operations in the district until a matter the company has commenced in the courts is settled.

The company took to court several local leaders on a string of charges including that of demanding kick-backs and disrupting mining activities.

The Concerned Citizens of Chitipa have also given the Malawi Revenue Authority until Friday next week to remove its officers from Ilomba Border post where Malawi shares her boundary with Tanzania.

The group made the resolutions during a citizen rally held at the district's market Centre yesterday afternoon.
