FDH Bank plc has broken an all time record of being the first institution to establish a service center and officially launched it's branch on Monday March 11, 2024 in Likoma island.

Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) has confirmed that it will take over the operations of Likoma and Chizumululu Water Users Associations (WUAs) following a request made by the islanders some two years ago.

The islanders made the request through Likoma district council asking NRWB to bail out WUA which was struggling financially to sustain the facilities due to population growth.

Director of Operations at NRWB, Dr Asumani Ungwe, made the revelation yesterday at a meeting at held at the district’s council.

Traditional Authority Kabuthu of Chizumulu Island, said on behalf of senior chief Mkumpha 3, the island communities are of the view that, with NRWB, will held deal with current challenges.

Vice Council Chairperson for Likoma District Council Ernest Gulu has warned of unspecified action against parents who will subject their children to child Labour during the school holiday.

Government has advised Likoma district council to officially open and enroll the first ever generic cohort of students at the newly built Likoma Community Technical college in January next year.

According to approval letter which Zodiak has seen and addressed to Likoma District Commissioner and copied to Technical Entrepreneur Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA) north, of 5th December 2022, signed by secretary in the ministry of labour Rexford Kachepa, the ministry is pleased that the community has understood the importance of opening the college by helping the district council to connect water and electricity at the college facility.

"In light of the above development the ministry would like to allow the council to go ahead with the planned exercise of opening the college in January 2023...the ministry is ready to work with you." reads part of the letter.

Confirming with Zodiak on the development spokesperson for Likoma district council Ireen Mseteka said: "the council is well prepared for the opening of the college such that recruitment processes have started and by January just like other community colleges Likoma will open with the first cohort."

In his remarks, Northern region manager for TEVETA Joseph Chikopa, told Zodiak today that his office is working around the clock ahead of the official gland opening of the long awaited technical college in January 2023.

"We are working within our means to show Malawians that TEVETA has finally reached the people of Likoma and Chizumulu Islands with the first ever in memorial a vocational skills tertiary institution," he added.

The first cohort is expected to register about 30 girls and boys likely to feel proud to be the first graduates after their successful studies.

It has transpired that information dissemination in the fight against communicable diseases can be achieved through promotion of sports activities which attract large gatherings.

Stakeholders have recommended to government and its partners to declare Likoma and Chizumulu Islands prone district to disaster occurrences due to its geographical position which is a key risk factor threatening lives and property of the Island people.

As the Affordable Input Program (AIP) remains the Malawi government’s bullet of shooting down hunger and poverty, the fight is facing another fierce enemy which has grossly interfered and compromised drive to promote the Malawi Development Goals (MDGs) on food security and poverty reduction at a household level by 2030.
