Police on Likoma Island are allegedly investigating reports that some of them have been taking bribes and aiding Mozambican nationals flout covid-19 preventive measures and board Malawi vessels on Lake Malawi without following procedure.

For nearly three months now, Likoma district (comprising Likoma and Chisumulu islands on Lake Malawi) has operated without a District Health Officer in office.

Fishermen in Likoma Island have disagreed with government’s fresh sanction for a complete ban of the use of prohibited fishing nets on Lake Malawi.

A disagreement has ensued on Likoma island fishermen and government over seasonal prohibition of fishing activity on the lake effective 1 February, 2020.
