Abandon Dangerous Posts: Body Tells Nurse-Midwives

The National Organization of Nurses and Midwives in Malawi says its’ fact finding exercise has established that a recent attack on the nursing officer, Chriford Semu, was unfounded and unwarranted as he attended to the expectant woman, in subject, within his scope of practice.

“Our investigation has established that the nurse midwife in question attended to the expectant woman within the scope of his practice.

“We advise HealthCare workers remaining at Bowe health centre and in other health facilities in the country whose lives are in danger must urgently remove themselves from such health facilities,” NONMA Executive Director, Shouts Simeza told Zodiak Online.

NONMA is under Human Resources for Health Coalition which conducted a fact finding exercise to establish truth on allegation that the nursing officer at Bowe Health centre in Dowa neglected a pregnant woman who later died at Ntchisi District hospital.

But Malawi Health Equity Network Executive Director, George Jobe, has objected to the call for health care workers to withdraw labour in situations of danger in health facilities, saying the matter had already been resolved when MHEN engaged community members, chiefs, healthcare workers and Dowa District health officers.

“We have a problem with the idea that Bowe healthcare workers should leave the facility because community members apologized and agreed to maintain the damaged house,” Jobe said.

The developments at Bowe Health Centre have already begun biting villagers hard as HIV positive individuals who access antiretroviral therapy through the facility are now stranded.

“I have only one pill of ARV remaining and when I go to the nearest hospital, I am sent back. I do not know what I am going to do. My life is in danger,” he said.

Dowa District hospital officials have told Zodiak Online that the health facility will be reopened only when community members renovate the damaged house allocated to the nursing officer.
