Commander of the Malawi Defense Force, General Vincent Nundwe, says the force is soon introducing quarterly inter-unit cross-country competitions in a bid to prepare military athletes for bigger competitions.

Nundwe said this Friday in Mzuzu during the 2019-2020 inter-unit cross-country competition.

Nundwe says the army hopes that the quarterly competitions shall help prepare athletes for national competitions that would help spot athletes for international games.

He said the force prides in having military officers that are fit all the time through continuous trainings, exercises and sporting activities.

“We need to do it at least quarterly so that they can practice often and participate in international competitions,” said Nundwe.

During the competition at Mzuzu golf club the winner for the men’s category was Kefasi Kasiteni from Cobbe Barracks.

“I prepared well, that’s why I have done better,” said Kasiteni.

The winner for the women’s category was Mary Kamwendo from Kamuzu Barracks: “The last race I was in position three. Now I’m on position one. Last time I did not train, but this time I did”.

Each of the winners went home with K100,000.00 each.

Kamuzu Barracks scooped first positions for units for the male and female races.
