Malawi Chess National Team Out of FIDE Online Olympiad
Malawi Chess National team has failed to advance to fifth round of the International Chess Federation Online Olympiad chess tournament having finished on position 7 out of 10 countries in pool C.
According to Chess Association of Malawi publicist Alfred Chinthere internet connectivity contributed to the team's poor performance as only 3 teams were expected to advance to the next round.
"Though we had problems with our internet connectivity, overall we had some individuals who performed better.
"FIDE Master Joseph Mwale had quite a good run but wasn't enough to guarantee us passage to Division 3.
"We shall sit down and look at our mistakes and problem electrify some of them so that we do better in our next online tournaments," said Chinthere.
This was the first Olympiad held online due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.
The clear favorites Nigeria and Lebanon along with the “revelation of the tournament” Mauritania progressed to Division 3 with a round to spare.
After loosing to Mauritania Lebanon might have had some problems but the team resolved all the issues in a key match with Nigeria.
Mauritania sensationally won the tournament in Pool C, Lebanon came second, Nigeria is only third. All three teams will be in the spotlight in Division 3.
