Squash-Over 40 Players Register For Lilongwe Open
The first tournament of squash since sports was suspended in March this year due to COVID19 situation is scheduled to take place over this weekend in Lilongwe.
The tournament dubbed “Lilongwe Open” will start on 30th October and end on 1st November 2020 at Sunbird Lilongwe hotel.
Three categories have been lined up to take center stage with the men’s A division, ladies, and veterans Division.
Organizing Chairperson of the tournament David Ng’onamo told us that over 40 Squash players have registered for the tournament with the men’s A division having over 20 athletes, Ladies category 12 athletes have registered so far with the veterans' category getting its own share of the athletes.
“We are delighted that there is overwhelming response from our players, they have indeed registered in large numbers and it's obvious the tournament will be massive to watch.
“The preparations have been going on well and we are expecting a good tournament because it has attracted interest from players outside Lilongwe like James Matewere and Julius Taulo which is really good."
Meanwhile, Ng’onamo has revealed that the Lilongwe open tournament is being sponsored by the players themselves as their efforts to court companies were frustrated.
“One thing I should mention here is that the tournament is being sponsored by the players and officials to the tune of 2.1 million kwacha.
“We tried talking to talk to companies and organizations but we were not successful in our talks but luckily players and officials rescued the situation and here we are ready for the showdown."
Overall winners of the tournament will walk away with over 150000 kwacha, a trophy, and medals.
All participating athletes and officials will be tested for covid19 before the actual tournament on Friday.
