The Sapitwas, a Mulanje based rugby team has resumed its training just a week after winning a trio rugby bonanza which was organized by the Africathletics, an international sporting organization.

The Sapitwas beat the Blantyre rugby team and the Red Ants from Luchenza on 17th August, 2023.

Coach for the Sapitwas Esmy Besten told Zodiak Online on Saturday that the training they are having at Mulanje Sports Club is normal as they want to improve their skills.

"We will continue with our training at Mulanje Golf Club to improve and develop new skills chasing our dream to become part of the under 18 national rugby team," said Esmy.

Meanwhile, the Africathletics which recently launched a women’s rugby 7s project in Mulanje said they are targeting girls aged between 11 and 14 and the project aims at addressing issues of child marriages and early pregnancies.

Africathletics Representative Lea Simonini said the choice of female athletes is not random but has a social purpose.

“Tackling gender inequality through sports is a powerful way to inspire and empower girls and break down gender barriers on and off the field," said Lea.

Early this month, Africathletics organized a second training campus with international volunteers who brought their rugby expertise to improve the skills of both the Sapitwas team and local coaches.

According to Lea, from September 2023 onwards, education will become the next fundamental pillar of the project and the Sapitwas will have access to a new library at the Mulanje Sports Club offering classes of Mathematics, English, and Computer Science.
